Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Joseph W. Harbert was born on September 25, 1835 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He married Emma Evans, with whom he raised their children, Homer, Henry, Ida, Floy, Emma, Alvin, and Joseph Harbert Junior. In 1859 Joseph and Emma moved to Walla Walla, Washington, where they bought 1,100 acres of farmland, which he turned into wheat fields and a vineyard. He died in 1889.

The Joseph Harbert Papers contain receipts from a variety of companies including Glassford's Lumber and Leroux's Wagons and Blacksmithing. These papers, which date from 1859 through 1889, also contain a few letters to, and news clippings about, Joseph Harbert. It also includes a brief play script about Walla Walla during the Civil War, featuring key historical Walla Wallans such as Myron Eells and John Boyer.
