Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Joyce Collins (1900-1984) was born Joyce Mildred Hazleton on November 24, 1900 in Sumas, Washington. She attended the College of Puget Sound and spent the summer of 1928 attending the summer program given by the University of Washington at the University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island, Washington.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories (FHL) was established as a marine biology field station in 1903 by Trevor Kincaid, an assistant professor of zoology at the UW. The station was founded as a summer program for high school and college teachers. Courses in zoology, biology, botany and other topics were offered.

The Medea was a glass bottom boat used as a research vessel owned by Captain Louie Scribner and was used at the FHL for transporting students, collecting expeditions and dredging.

After relocating the facility numerous times on San Juan Island from 1904 to 1910, the program finally settled on the unused 484-acre military reservation at Point Caution (also Military Point). President Harding granted the military facility to the university in 1921. The FHL still occupies the site and continues to educate students in marine biology and oceanography.
