Fort Huachuca, located in Cochise County, Arizona was founded as camp Huachuca on March 3, 1877 by Captain Samuel Marmaduke Whitside leading two companies of the 6th Cavalry. Huachuca was designated as a fort in 1882. Long associated with the history of African American service in the United States Army, in 1913 Fort Huachuca became the base for the 10th Cavalry Regiment, better known as the "Buffalo Soldiers." From 1916 to 1917, the base was commanded by Charles Young, the first African American to be promoted to colonel. During World War II, For Huachuca served as the training base for African American troops serving in the 92nd and 93rd Infantry Divisions.
