Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Martin F. Seedorf Papers consists of research materials gathered for instruction and publication on the history of eastern Washington with a heavy emphasis on the history of Grant and Douglas counties. Topics covered include the economic development of the region, local geography, early settlements by Euro Americans, and notable events, such as the eruption of Mount Saint Helens. The collection contains many files on the use of the Columbia River both for land reclamation through irrigation and for electricity through the construction of dams, such as the Grand Coulee Dam. Collection materials consist of clippings, photographs, newspapers, publications about the history and development of the Big Bend region, and Seedorf's notes taken from books, articles, and other publications. The collection also contains manuscripts and oral histories used in Memories of Grant County, a periodical published by the Grant County Historical Society.

Detailed Description of the CollectionReturn to Top
Series 1: Subject files, 1889-2000Return to Top
The subject files consist of information gathered by Seedorf about various topics on the history of eastern Washington. Files are arranged in a rough chronological order based on the economic and social development of the region. For example, files on ferry boats precedes files on automobiles to reflect the fact that ferries pre-date automobiles in the region. In addition to files on specific topics, this series contains oral histories, manuscripts, and notes for Memories of Grant County, a periodical published by the Grant County Historical Society. This series also contains a file on the Matthews family, the topic of Rita Seedorf's article "Early Days in Waterville with I.W. Matthews."
