Historical Background

Mount St. Helens, an active volcano in Skamania County, Washington, was known as the "Mt. Fuji of America" due to its symmetrical beauty and likeness to the mountain in Japan. Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980. The eruption lasted for nine hours and destroyed more than 150 square miles of forest and recreation area. Approximately sixty people were reported dead or missing. Following the main eruption, there were 5 smaller explosive eruptions over a period of 5 months and the plume of ash could be seen as far away as Seattle.
