Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Mel Shelton was a Music Professor at Boise State University from 1968 until his retirement in 1991. Prior to his Boise State career, Shelton was band director at Boise High School for nine years. Among many noteworthy accomplishments, Shelton established the Boise State University Jazz Festival, now known as the Gene Harris Jazz Festival. Because of Shelton's distinguished contributions to the community, Boise Mayor David Beiter named November 14, 2004 "Mel Shelton Day" and in 2005 United States Senator Mike Crapo recognized Shelton's work with the Spirit of Idaho award.

Mel Shelton died June 1, 2012.
