Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Giovanni Marie Denis George Costigan was a history professor at the University of Washington, a staunch defender of human rights, and a leader in the peace movement.

He was born February 15, 1905 in England. His father was a poor Irish Catholic peasant farmer, the youngest child of 12, who married the daughter of his wealthy Anglo-Irish landlord. Costigan’s mother was the youngest daughter of a Protestant family, the Warrens, that had lived in Ireland for 300 years. Costigan’s parents eloped to England and settled in Brighton, assuming a middle-class life style. Giovanni was the youngest of their three children. Giovanni’s father died when he was 11. Costigan was educated at a Catholic boarding school in Sussex and at Oxford University. At the age of 22 he came to the U.S. for graduate study at the University of Wisconsin. After completing his doctorate in history in 1930, he spent the next four years teaching at the University of Idaho’s southern branch in Pocatello. While there he met and, in 1931, married Amne Johnson. During World War II Costigan served as an information officer in the U.S. Air Corps. He taught Irish and English history at the University of Washington beginning in 1934, became a full professor in 1948 and retired in 1975. In retirement, he continued to lecture and was a popular speaker until his death in 1990. Amne Costigan died in 1995.

A staunch defender of human rights and leader in the peace movement, Costigan was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam war and U.S. involvement in Central America. His books include Sir Robert Wilson: A Soldier of Fortune in the Napoleonic Wars , Sigmund Freud: A Short Biography , Makers of Modern England: The Force of Individual Genius in History and History of Modern Ireland: With a Sketch of Earlier Times.

Acquisition Info: The Costigan papers were transferred to the Libraries by Partners In Care, executors for Amne Costigan’s estate, in 1993. Additional material was received from the manager of the University’s Trust and Estate Gifts in 1996.

The major series have been established, but only the correspondence has been organized and refoldered. Subject files is the largest series. The titles which Costigan used on the envelopes have been preserved as the title of the subject files. There may be clippings about the same or similar subject in the clippings series. Material which Costigan collected for his scholarly publications are in the research files series.

Separated Material: Books from the Costigans’ collection were added to cataloged collections in the Libraries. A few additional publications found in the papers during processing were transferred to Gifts Processing for cataloging.

Amne Costigan Family Papers
Scope and Content: Papers include:
  • Wooden box with date 1810 inscribed on insideof lid. Contains letters to Charles and Mary Anne Garraway great grandparents of Giovanni Costigan, dating from 1818-1881; a bill dated 1899 to Mary Anne “Nannie” Warren grandmother and daughter of Charles and Mary; drawings and printed illustrations, possibly to be used in the 1839 travel journal; is a miniature Bible inscribed: “to EHG from Nan” (Mary Anne Garraway Warren) “His loving Sister” is written in pencil; black-bordered piece of notepaper contains “Belonging to my darling when quite a boy.”

One poem signed Byron and two signed T. Moore have been put into a folder. These appear to be in the same hand. Included, too, is a pen and ink drawing.

The content of the letters to Charles and Mary Anne Garraway probably has significant historical interest concerning Anglo-Irish family life in early to middle 19th century Ireland. These are landed gentry, many of whom inhabited castles.

  • A travel journal in manuscript, by a young man, having “finished [his] 13th year.” It is dated 1826. Initials on the spine of this journal are: M.A.B. No name beginning with B occurs in the Costigan family tree. This is an account of a family’s moving to Thetford, England, then of a prolonged trip to Paris and the trip back to England. Afterwards, it becomes a daily journal of family events and illnesses and how this boy’s mother coped with these.

  • A five-volume travel journal in manuscript titled “A Drop In The Water in the Ocean,” possibly by the same author above, dated 1839, with many small, pencil-like illustrations by JB, GB, and GH 1841. If the author of the first journal’s initials are M.A.B., then the pencil drawings with the above initials could be done by siblings of the author. The writer chose his title after explaining that his efforts were not worth the titles “journal,” “diary,” and certainly not of “book.”

The volumes are Parts I through V with several chapters each. After an Introduction, Part I relates in detail the about the author’s visits from Antwerp and other cities in Belgium to Germany ending with Godesburg. He is frankly critical of or surprised by the beauty of each city and adds a quotation from a fitting poem to support his views.

Parts II through V describe cities in Germany, France, Austria, and Italy, ending in Rome. He exclaims on arriving there: “Am I in Rome? I am in Rome!” and seems delighted. This seems to be an intellectual exercise as was the tour itself and the earlier journal, a school-room effort.

  • An accounts book signed Earl Lewis Warren and dated January 1, 1852, which continues on to 1861.

  • A memory book to Edward Lewis Warren, Dated 1905, by Mary Anne Warren filled with quotations and musings which pleased her to think about.

  • There is a one volume “History of the Warren Family” by the Reverend Thomas Warren, Ireland, published in 1902

  • The last item of this part of the box’s collection is a memory book belonging to the Church family of Idaho, apparently relatives of Mrs. Costigan.
