Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Sylvestre Randafison (1928-2003) was a valiha player, teacher, and musical ambassador from Madagascar. He was best known for performing traditional valiha pieces in a way that created a dialogue with the ancestors. He was also known as an ethnomusicologist and traveled around Africa collecting more than 1,000 pieces of traditional music. During his career, he served as a visiting instructor at the University of Washington as well as a professor of music at the National Institute of Research.

Performer: Sylvestre Benjamin Randafison/valiha (traditional tube-zither with 18 metal strings) recorded during Randafison's tenure as Visiting Artist, Ethnomusicology Division, 1992-1993.
Contents: a specifically composed 'Air' for the students of Transcription and Analysis; Betsiboka (version 1); Betsiboka (version 2); Apela (version 1); Apela (version 2); Betsiboka (version 3).
Taped examples were prepared for use as transcription assignments for Music 536: Transcription and Analysis; Professor Lorraine Sakata; each example was shot from different camera angle.
