Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Isaac Maimon emigrated from Tekirdag, Turkey to Seattle in 1924 with his parents and two brothers. These papers reveal his contribution to the cultural and institutional life of the Seattle Sephardic community, and, in particular, to Congregation Sephardic Bikur Holim. In the first year of Isaac's arrival, his father, Abraham, the new rabbi at Sephardic Bikur Holim, put all of his sons to work teaching in the congregation's Talmud Torah. Four years later, in 1928, Isaac became a founding member of Sephardic Bikur Holim's Shalom Alechem Society. One of the society's objectives included ensuring a doctor's care for each member based on a ten cent weekly membership fee. By 1956, Isaac's involvement with Sephardic Bikur Holim culminated in his becoming its president. The Seattle Sephardic Brotherhood elected him Man of the Year in 1987, and in 1989, he became the recipient of Sephardic Bikur Holim's Humanitarian Award.

Maimon documented the history of Seattle's Sephardic community in his articles for La Boz, Bikur Holim's monthly newsletter, and he remains its current editor. He shared this history with an even larger audience when he narrated a bus tour of Seattle's Sephardic places for the members of the American Sephardic convention in 1989.
