Biographical NoteReturn to Top
J. Fred Anderson was born on December 5, 1976 near Pittsfield, Illinois, to farmers Olive Lee and Charles "Buck" Anderson. He lived in Chillicothe, Missouri; Leeds, North Dakota; and Spokane, Washington, where he was a newspaper photographer. He married May Allison Dent in 1908 and settled in Newport, Washington. As a professional photographer, he spent time photographing Native Americans in eastern Washington and Idaho, including the Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene, Blackfeet, and Flathead tribes. Anderson died in 1952.
