Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The city’s second most ambitious regrade (the first being the razing of Denny Hill), the Jackson Street Regrade actually extended blocks south of Jackson Street, which is still the neighborhood’s principal thruway today. Nearly six miles of streets and about fifty-six city blocks were involved – twenty-nine of them excavated and twenty-seven filled in a “balance” of eroding and collecting. Ultimately, with 85 feet cut from the ridge at 12th Avenue, the grade of Jackson Street was reduced from fifteen percent to five. The regrade took place between 1907 and 1910 and was headed by R. H. Thomson.
