Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Mr. Weaver Dial was born in Seattle, Washington on November 17, 1916. Dial was a custodian for the Seattle School District, where he worked for many years at Garfield High School. Dial is perhaps most remembered for his pirate portrayals in the Seattle Seafair Pirates and the Northwest Pirates of the Coast. In addition to his position as secretary of the Seafair Pirates, he was Captain Kidd in 1962 and then served as the organization's honorary second in command, Davy Jones, in the 1980s. The Seafair Pirates were formed in 1949 to promote Seattle and Seafair, while providing service to the community. Weaver was a practiced folk artist who designed the logo of the Seafair Pirates as well as hundreds if not thousands of paintings of pirates on canvas, barrel covers, coats, and pants over the years. Dial and his wife Mary Salle had two children together, Dixie and Yankee. He died on June 17, 1993 in Seattle, Washington.

This collection consists of two photograph albums of Mr. Weaver Dial, his family, and friends. The first album contains photographs largely from 1920 to 1932, primarily portraits of the Dial family and friends. The second album contains photographs largely from 1940 to 1946, primarily consisting of portraits of Weaver Dial, his family, and friends as they traveled around the United States, but also some taken in the Philippines that were sent to Dial by Gus Marolich.

103 photographs mounted on black paper pages with photo corners.
Most images described in white ink with names and dates. Some descriptions are
written on the back of photos. An additional 20 loose photographs are tucked in
an envelope in the back of the album. Known individuals include: Weaver Dial,

envelope in the back of the album. Envelope in back also has union payment
receipts to the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers, Iron Ship Builders
