Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1905, the Walla Walla Public Library was established in a building built by funds from Andrew Carnegie and designed by architect Henry Osterman. After the library outgrew this building and relocated in 1970, the Carnegie building became vacant. The Walla Walla City Council solicited suggestions for how to utilize the building, and a group of community members campaigned for it to become an art and cultural center. This plan was approved by the City Council, and in 1972, the Carnegie Center was officially opened. The Carnegie Art Center served as Walla Walla, Washington's only community art center until it closed in 2008.
