Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Aubrey Gorbman (1914-2003) was born in Detroit, attending first Wayne State University and then the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in zoology in 1940. Gorbman worked at Wayne State University, then Barnard College and Columbia University where he eventually chaired the Department of Zoology. He then moved to Seattle in 1963 to become the chair of the Zoology Department at the University of Washington, where he served as active professor and emeritus professor until his death.

Gorbman's research interest was endocrinology, working especially in development of comparative endocrinology, co-authoring the first textbook on the topic in the early 1960s. He conducted major investigations on the comparative aspects of thyroid function, its evolution, and physiology.
