Accession No. 3777-001: Eva Goldberg oral history interview, 1986Return to Top
Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Mildred Rosenbaum, 6/17/86, with transcript.
Mrs. Goldberg tells about her family, the Charlet family, giving some details about Jewish life in Centralia. After marrying one of the sons of Jacop Goldberg, Alan, of Olympia, she moved to Olympia. She traces the Goldberg family from North Dakota to Washington and talks about the Jewish community and how observant Jews managed to get Kosher meat and about the Olympia synagogue and Jewish education for the children. She discusses the Depression years and the anti-semitic activities of the Silver Shirts who had an encampment near Olympia. She talks of Jewish participation in Fort Lewis and at Evergreen College and relationships with the Jewish staff there. She describes the family home on Hood Canal to which all the various Goldberg families come in summer and for Passover and other family events.
