Biographical NoteReturn to Top

John Blacking (1928-1990) was an ethnomusicologist, author, and social anthropologist from England. During his youth, he studied under well-known anthropologist Meyer Fortes at King's College, Cambridge. After serving in Malaysia as part of the British army, he was given a position at the International Library of African Music where he studied the music and culture of the Venda people of South Africa. In 1965, the University of Witwatersrand awarded him a PhD and a professorship for his work with Venda children's songs. From 1970 until his death in 1990, he served as a professor of social anthropology at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland. Blacking is known for his advocacy for a more anthropological perspective in the study of music.
