Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Robert Boyd Walkinshaw (1884-1963) was an author, lawyer, mountaineer, and local historian. He was born in Millwood, Pennsylvania and graduated from the College of Wooster as a Phi Beta Kappa member. Following graduation, Walkinshaw toured Europe from the summer of 1906 to 1907 generating a lengthy diary of his travels. Upon his return, Walkinshaw began to study law and was awarded his degree from Columbia University in 1911, writing his thesis on the “Taxation of Government Agencies.” He married Jeanie Mayer Walter (1885-1976) on June 10, 1914 in Baltimore, Maryland. They had two children, Walter and Valerie.
From 1912 to 1916 Walkinshaw practiced law in Tacoma, Washington. He and Jeanie moved to Seattle in 1917. He was a member of the Rainier Club, the Monday Club and the Seattle King County, Washington State, and American Bar Associations. His article, "The Nuremberg and Tokyo Trials: Another Step Toward International Justice" was published in The American Bar Association Journal in 1949. Walkinshaw was awarded an honorary law degree from College of Wooster in 1955.
Walkinshaw wrote a local historical and geographical work called, On Puget Sound in 1929, reprinted in 1951. Jeanie’s sketches provided the illustrations for On Puget Sound. Jeanie studied art in Paris for two years under Lucien Seimon and Rene Mesnard. She returned to the United States in 1911 where continued her studies with Robert Henri. Jeanie was also an active member of the Seattle community serving as chairman of sketchers, under the arts and skills department of the King County Chapter of the American Red Cross and a representative of Seattle and the Northwest for Portraits, Inc. She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, The National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, Salons of America, Pacific Northwest Academy for the Arts, and Women Painters of Washington.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The collection contains manuscript drafts, folios, publications, diaries, notes, personal and professional correspondence, legal documents, clippings, photographs, negatives, slides, sketches, prints, sound recordings on LP and tape, ephemera, speeches, financial records, posters, maps, and itineraries. A small portion of the papers are Jeanie’s sketches and materials relating to her.
Contents include materials generated while he was a student at the College of Wooster and material relating to his honorary law degree and alumni involvement (1903-1955). Papers from a European tour (1906-1907) consist mostly of correspondence, an itinerary, and a diary of his travels. Minimal papers from Columbia University consist of alumni newsletters and a copy of his master’s thesis (1911-1929). Professional papers include legal documents, letters, financial documents, and publications from a court case in which he represented the Russian Greek Orthodox Catholic Church in Seattle (1923-1930), as well as other miscellaneous documents and letters from his law practice. Walkinshaw's writing career is represented mainly by material concerning On Puget Sound, including correspondence, drafts, sketches, and prints of the drawings (1927-1961). Additionally, materials and drafts of his essay on the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials (1944-1949) and for a speech he gave on Woodrow Wilson (1916-1926) and "The Study of Foreign Languages" (1934-1935) are included. There are a variety of writing files ranging from clippings, notes, and lists of words and phrases (1917-1961).
The collection contains personal correspondence and documents relating to Robert and Jeanie’s home life, as well as documents and publications relating to Seattle. There are publications, documents, menus, and diaries relating to Robert’s mountaineering and membership in the Rainier club (1930-1963) as well as correspondence and minutes relating to the Monday Club (1936-1940).
