Chief mate on the S.S. Pipe Spring from February 20 to September 3, 1946. Butler served on board this cargo vessel as it sailed west from Long Beach, California, and circumnavigated the globe. He made stops in the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Suez, Italy, the Azores, Aruba, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Seattle, Colombia, South America and Portland, Maine before leaving the ship in New York City.
