Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in Warsaw Poland, Alexander Sytman is a Holocaust survivor who was two years old at the outbreak of WWII. He recounts his early childhood memories in the Warsaw Ghetto. His father died there, but Alex and other family members escaped and survived in hiding. After the war he and his mother lived in France until they could immigrate to the U.S. Alex, at 10 years old, traveled alone from Paris to Corvallis, Oregon, to join an uncle who adopted him. Alex and his mother later moved to Seattle because of its larger Jewish community. Alex Sytman attended Garfield High School, the University of Washington, and the University of Washington School of Medicine. He served in the Vietnam War. He specialized in cardiology and became a leading cardiologist in Seattle. He reported highlights of his medical career and comments on one-time discrimination, locally and nationally, against Jews in medicine. Dr. Sytman discusses his attitudes toward Judaism, participation in various Jewish youth groups, and his past and current community activities, such as the SAMIS Foundation, Congregation Herzl Ner Tamid, MEDIC One Foundation. He has also been an avid participant in multiple sports.
