Historical NoteReturn to Top
Mario S. De Pillis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1926. He received a B.A. degree in 1952 and a M.A. degree in history at the University of Chicago in 1954. Continuing his graduate studies at Yale University, he earned a M.A. and a Ph.D. degree in 1956 and 1961 respectively. His dissertation was awarded the George Washington Egleston Prize in American History. In 1958 Professor De Pillis commenced his academic career as an instructor of American religious and social history at the University of Masachusetts at Amherst where he became a full professor in 1976. He also taught at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Munich, the University of Freiburg and the University of Konstanz. A founding member of the Journal of Social History, De Pillis served on the editorial board from 1966 until 2002. He was a member of the board of editors for the Journal of Mormon History as well as a member of the board of directors for the Mormon Historical Association and the Communal Studies Association. From 1982 through 1987, De Pillis edited the journal of Communal Societies. Some of his publications on Mormon history appeared in Dialogue, the Journal of Social History, Church History, the Journal of Mormon History, and Sunstone. In 1993 De Pillis became president of the Mormon History Association.

The Mario S. De Pillis papers (1957-2008) consist of correspondence, reviews and other materials. Among this correpondence are letters with Fawn Brodie, Daniel Boorstin, Richard Brown, Newell Bringhurst, Lavina Fielding Anderson, Danny Jorgensen, Bill Mulder, Polly Aird, Michael Quinn, Lawrence Foster, and Peter Stearns. Particularly noteworthy are the communications associated with the founding and the development of one of America's premier historical journals, the Journal Of Social History.
