The University of Washington Ethnomusicology Archives has been collecting and curating unique ethnographic music recordings for over 50 years. Its holdings of more than 15,000 items include field recordings documenting music traditions of all kinds from most areas of the world, concert recordings of visiting musicians, and films and videos of a variety of musical events, as well as several hundred musical instruments. The Archives serves the students and faculty in the UW Ethnomusicology Program, the broader university community, Pacific Northwest tribes, and an international clientele of musicians, students, and teachers.

Full title of event: Symposium on Native American Music & Culture, Oct. 4-6, 1974; recording includes portion of symposium proceedings; co-sponsored by Society for Ethnomusicology, Northwest Chapter, UW Ethnomusicology Dept. and Center for Asian Arts, United Indians of All Tribes Foundations, and other groups (see doc file).

Reel 1 - Dr. Thomas Johnston (University of Alaska, Fairbanks) - Klinkit [Tlingit] Indians in Alaska (musical instruments - drums, rattles, etc., and associated symbolism); (original tape runs out before end of lecture)
Reel 2 - Dr. Ida Halpern (Vancouver, B.C.) - Potlatch ceremony - Kwakiutl and Hamatsa of the Northwest, description and listening examples;
Reel 3 - John Emhoolah (Kiowa, Green River) - about his traditions, tribal sharing, bone (stick, hand) games, war dance (original tape runs out before end of presentation).
