Regional planning agency.
The Puget Sound Governmental Conference (after 1975, the Puget Sound Council of Governments) served as a comprehensive and continuous planning agency made up of planners and members of the boards of county commissioners of King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties and representatives from Bremerton, Seattle, Everett, Tacoma and Washington State. Established in 1954 as the Puget Sound Regional Planning Conference, 1954-1958, by staff planners from the four counties, its purpose was to facilitate the coordinated planning and orderly development of the Puget Sound region. As the Puget Sound Governmental Conference, the scope of its regional planning expanded to consider all aspects and interrelations of the planning process. It considered population, land use, transportation, use, social and community values, economics and research in a comprehensive and continuing process redefining and reestablishing goals to fit needs. All federal and state funds for regional planning were funnelled through the Conference. Subgroups of the organization were the Puget Sound Regional Planning Commission, Transportation Study, Project Open Space, and the Regional Jail Study.
