Historical NoteReturn to Top
Murray, Idaho is a small-town northeast of Wallace on Prichard Creek, established when gold was discovered in the Coeur d'Alene mountains. Murray is the oldest existing town in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District; it was first settled in 1883. Previously called Curry and Murraysville, the name was shortened to Murray in 1885. By 1884, the town had grown to a population of between 2000 people, as people came to prospect for gold, but by the end of 1886 it had dropped down to 100 people. The county seat was moved away from Murray in 1898.
Notable figures who lived in Murray, Idaho include Maggie Hall (aka Molly B'Dam) and Wyatt Earp.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Murray Cemetery was originally created in 1887 with the burial of a Union veteran from the Civil War. The cemetery went on to hold other Union veterans, as well as mining figures from the gold rush era, including Molly B'Dam.
