Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in Waumandee, Wisconsin in 1915. Received Bachelor of Science degree from Hamline University in 1937 and degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in 1939 and 1941. Has served on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin, University of Kansas, Washington State University (Prof. of Zoophysiology 1952-1956; Dean of Graduate School, 1960-1964), and University of Washington (Prof. of Zoophysiology since 1965; Chairman, Dept. of Zoology since 1966). Fulbright Research Scholar and Honorary Lecturer in Zoology, University of Otago, 1953-54. Guggenheim Fellow and Visiting Prof. of Zoology, University of Western Australia, 1958-59. Alexand von Humboldt-Stiftung Senior American Scientist Award, Max-Planck-Institut fur Verhaltensphysiologie (Abteilung Aschoff), 1978. Chairman, Division of Biology and Agriculture, National Research Council--National Academy of Sciences, 1969-1973. President, International Union of Biological Sciences, 1967-73. President, I. International Symposium on Avian Endocrinology, Calcutta, 1977. President XVII. International Ornithological Congress, Berlin, 1978.
