Nelson Paul Beebe was born around 1830 near Rochester, New York. He became a fisherman, first going to sea in 1845. He was only about fifteen years old. In February 1852, Beebe decided to travel to California to try his hand in the gold rush. He was baptized into the LDS Church in 1855 while in California.

The Nelson Paul Beebe diaries and autobiography [photocopies] (1845-1856) consist of the writings of Nelson Paul Beebe. The writings are separted into four volumes and titled, "Life of Nelson Paul Beebe, 1845-1855," "Life of Nelson Paul Beebe, 1851," "Daily Diary, 1851," and "Accounts of Brd of the Yachst Cornelia." The writings are mainly of Beebe's journey to California during the gold rush, his experiences in California, his conversion to the LDS Church, and his journey to Salt Lake City. These writings are not the originals, but rather photocopies.
