Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Carl Freylinghuysen Gould (1873-1939) was a prominent Seattle architect. Gould was born in New York City, graduated from Harvard University in 1898 and studied architecture and fine art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1898 to 1903. He moved to Seattle in 1908 and in 1914 joined with Charles H. Bebb to form Bebb & Gould. In 1913 he became a lecturer in architecture at the University of Washington and established the University's department of architecture in 1914. He served as professor and chair of the department until 1926. Gould designed over 20 buildings on the University of Washington campus. He also designed the original building for the Seattle Art Museum and many other structures in the Puget Sound area. Gould was also active in Seattle civic life as a founding member of the Seattle City Planning Commission; the Seattle Fine Arts Society and its successor, the Art Institute of Seattle, as well as other organizations.

Carl Gould's parents were descendants of prominent New York families. His father, Charles Judson Gould, was a successful New York merchant and financier and his mother, Annie Westbrook Gould, held property in the city that had passed through her family for 200 years and was an art collector. The Gould children were raised in New York City and at the family country home in Tarrytown and were educated in private schools.

Dorothy Wheaton Fay (1890-1976) married Carl Gould in 1915. The Goulds had three children, Carl Jr. (1916-1993), Anne (1917-) and John (1925-). Dorothy Gould attended Vassar and the University of Washington, where she received a Master's degree in English in 1937. Her chief interest was early Pacific Northwest history, and she wrote and lectured on the subject. She was active in numerous social and civic organizations, including the Seattle Garden Club, Seattle Fine Arts Society and the Vassar Club of Seattle.

Dorothy Wheaton Fay's parents were John Purinton Fay (1861-1930) and Alice Ober Fay (1863-1948), both of whom were natives of Massachusetts. The Fays moved to Seattle in 1889 where John Fay established a law practice and became involved in politics. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Republican-Progressive in 1912. Temple Segewick Fay (1896-1904), the Fays' eldest son, became a noted neurosurgeon.
