Historical NoteReturn to Top

Martha Springman Castagnoli was born in Salt Lake City in 1902. She was the fifth of seven children born to German immigrants, Fritz and Rosa Springman. Her father was the owner of the New Resort, a saloon in downtown Salt Lake City. The manuscript, written by Castagnoli and edited by her son, William G. Castagnoli, tells stories about her upbringing as a non-Mormon in the Salt Lake valley, the prejudice her family experienced because of her father's livelihood, the strained relationship between her father and mother, and other stories about life in the Salt Lake valley in the early part of the 1900s.
