Harold York was born in 1902 in Walla Walla, Washington to Mabel and Ray York. In approximately 1922 he moved to Portland, Oregon, and became a history teacher at Roosevelt High School. There he also coached football, as well as men's and women's basketball. He married Archie York, with whom he had a daughter, Gayle.
