Joseph Smith Horne was born in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, on 14 May 1842. He emigrated to Utah with his parents in 1847. He served in various capacities in the LDS Church, including two missions to Europe. He was a carpenter and wheelwright, served in the territorial legislature, and was mayor and city councilman of Richfield, among other things.
