Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Todd Shipyards was the result of a merger between Robins Dry Dock & Repair Company, Tietjen & Long Dry Dock Company, and the Seattle Construction and Dry Dock Company in 1916. Todd Shipyards operated out of Harbor Island in Seattle, Washington and completed work for the federal government as well as the Washington State Ferries. During World War II, Todd Shipyards completed contract work for both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Maritime Commission. Their facilities also provided 60 large cargo vessels for the British Purchasing Commission. Over 1,000 ships were built and 23,000 ships were converted during wartime. Todd Shipyards was sold to Vigor Industrial for $130 million in 2011.

Fighting Ships for Fighting Men
Ships on Puget Sound. Workers in jumpsuits and hard hats consulting over blueprints and talking outside. Men and women workers shown welding and working on ship parts. Views of Todd Shipyards from above; ships, cranes, and workers walking through the shipyards and past shipyard buildings. Hulls of ships in various states of completion. Views of shipyards from the water. A ship is shown from different angles. Workers walk through terminals and past shipyard buildings. A grassy area with logs laid out on it. Dock and shipyard shown from a boat. Workers pull hot metal plates from a forge, machine pieces and assemble parts. Shipyards work tour. Ship fabrication. Ship prow assembly. Ship is christened with a bottle of champagne. Workers complete detail work. Ships are viewed from the water and various angles. Crane lifts anchor to ship and workers take a lunch break. Workers crowd in front of a small building labeled "Ship Fitters." Workers at a lunch break. Workers move wood crates with the aid of a crane, install hoses, test gun-sights and gun operation. Testing of sail. Gun testing. Lowering of anchor. Sailors assemble on deck and men in uniform give speeches. Sailors pull on ropes, the ship pulls away.
