August Merikanto was born in Uurais, Finland, on 23 March 1879 and died in 1966 in Wawina, Minnesota. August emigrated from Finland in 1900. His trip took him by boat from Finland to England, by train through England to Liverpool, then to America on the boat Ivernia. He went directly to Virginia, Minnesota, and stayed there for 2 years. He then moved to Duluth where he lived for 17 years working in partnership in the Independent Bakery. August moved to Wawina, Minnesota in 1922 and ran a general merchandise store and post office for 29 years. He was a member of the Wawina Lutheran Church and chairman of the board for about 27 years. He was also Great Northern depot agent for 14 years and chaired the local Red Cross chapter, draft board, school board, and was a Sixth Degree Knight of the Kalevala. After retiring he resided in Floodwood, Minnesota.

This collection contains a photocopies article published in the Review Messenger in 1986 entitled, "Diary of a Finnish Immigrant." The article is prefaced with a brief biography and the translated diary of August Merikanto. The diary was written in 1900 and later translated by his step-daughter, Hilma Sylvia Merikanto Renvall. This is a first-hand account of what the emigrants went through in leaving Finland. The diary chronicles August’s experiences as he began his travels on the way to the United States in 1900. He describes preparations and the journey from Finland, treatment of emigrants, the people, scenery, and cities.
