Henry Weeks Sanderson was born on 13 March 1829 in Bladford, Hampden County, Massachusetts, to James and Mary Jane Sanderson. He enlisted in the Mormon Battlion in 1846 and later became a scout and hunter. He learned the Shoshone language well enough to converse with the Indians and was sent by the LDS Church to deliver goods to them and serve as interpreter. He married Rebecca Ann Sanders, and later, Sarah Jane Cole.

The Henry Weeks Sanderson autobiography and family history (1884-1887) was written by Sanderson (b. 1829), a man of many trades who settled in Utah. Sanderson records his family history and then describes his life, beginning with experiences with the LDS Church, including his reaction to the deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. He describes encounters with Indians, his hunts, travels, employment, relationships with others, and family.
