Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Huastec or Téenek ("people from here"; also known as Huaxtec, Wastek or Huastecos) are an Indigenous people of Mexico, living in the “La Huasteca” region that includes the states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas concentrated along the route of the Pánuco River and along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
The Huastec language is related to the Mayan languages spoken further south and east in Mexico and Central America. Huasteco has three dialects: Western (Potosino), Central (Veracruz), and Eastern (Otontepec). According to the 2005 population census, there are about 200,000 speakers of Huasteco in Mexico (some 120,000 in San Luis Potosí and some 80,000 in Veracruz). Wasteko-language programming is carried by the CDI's radio station XEANT-AM, based in Tancanhuitz de Santos, San Luis Potosí.
