Historical NoteReturn to Top
Laurel Sercombe has been the Archivist for the Ethnomusicology Program at the University of Washington since 1982. She has co-produced a series of music recordings with Northwest Folklife, lectured for classes in Ethnomusicology, Library and Information Science, and American Indian Studies, and designed and taught a course on sound archiving. In 1998 she received a pre-doctoral Smithsonian Research Fellowship and in 2001 received her Ph.D. with the dissertation And Then It Rained: Power and Song in Western Washington Coast Salish Myth Narratives. She is a member of the Music Library Association, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, and the Society for Ethnomusicology, for which she served as Current Discographer 1992–2000 and Treasurer 2000–2004. She serves on the boards of Jack Straw Productions and Northwest Heritage Resources. In 2013 she organized and hosted "Sounds of the World," a series of six programs for UWTV featuring film footage from the Robert Garfias Collection in the Ethnomusicology Archives.

Recorded by Laurel Sercombe and Feza Tansuğ for the UW Ethnomusicology Archives with the Panasonic SV-250 DAT recorder, Symetrix SX 202 dual mic preamp, and Neumann KM-83 mics (omnis) (mics hung over musicians at side of stage); cassette recording set-up by Tom Stiles mixing KM-83 and PA mics.
Performers: Nurullah Rasulmukhamedov/tar; Murajan Azimov/doire; Fatkhullah Rasulmukhamedov/gidjak; Ulugbeg Irnazarov/chang; Ilkhom Hamdanovay.
Introduction by Laurel Gray, head of the Uzbek Dance Society; opening remarks by Kadir Muminov in Uzbek and translated by Laurel Gray.
Featured dancers: Kadir Muminov and Kizlarkhon Dustmukhamedova.
This concert was part of the Ethnic Traditions International Concert Series (co-sponsored by the Ethnomusicology Division) presented by the Northwest Folklife Festival as part of the 1990 Goodwill Arts Festival.

The DAT original was copied to computer file June 2006 (1990-20_Uzbekistan); 90-20.1-2 WD are CD-R copies made from the computer file June 2006 (68:03, 17 tracks; 48:59, 12 tracks). Deteriorated condition of DAT caused clogging of DAT deck; successfully copied all but opening introduction to computer file; digitized cassette original, introduction only, and connected it to beginning of computer file.
