John Thayer Casey was born in New London, Connecticut in 1931. He started painting in oils at the age of twelve and received formal art training at the University of Oregon. He received his Bachelors of Arts in drawing and painting in 1958. In 1962, Casey graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in painting from the California College of Arts and Crafts. He taught studio art, history and theory at Western Oregon State College (now Western Oregon University) from 1965 until his retirement in 1988.
