Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Richard Emerson was a sociologist, University of Washington faculty member, and chair of the University of Washington Department of Sociology from 1975 to 1978. Emerson introduced the theory of social exchange, which emphasized relationships (rather than individual actions) among individuals as well as power and dependence. He was a member of the 1963 Mount Everest Expedition. Emerson died on December 23, 1982.

The papers include drafts of unpublished articles and copies of his Institute for Sociological Research articles, mainly concerning the 1963 Mount Everest expedition. Also included are expedition materials, chiefly pre-embarkation correspondence, diary tabulations, and drafts of articles. Individuals represented in the papers include James T. Lester, Jr.
