Shirley M. Thompson was born in Pasadena Ca., and was inspired to a nursing career by a sister in the field. Trained in Pasadena Hospital Nursing School (later Huntington Memorial). During WWII trained the Cadet Nurses Corps and later got a certificate of recognition for said work. Worked in private doctor's office, taught nursing, and got degrees (BA and MA) at Western Reserve U. Became Superintendent of Nursing at Doernbecher Children's Memorial Hospital (1944). President of the Oregon Nurses Assoc. (1946). Two terms at Gov. nomination to Oregon State Bd. of Nursing (1948-53). 1st Pres. of Oregon League of Nursing (1952), and Pres. of OSBN (1953-56).
During her years at DCH she eased visiting restrictions and established a unit for pre-mature infants (1950). Later in the '50s she helped in planning the teaching hospital (aka Medical School Hospital) on the Hospital Construction Committee, later becoming its superintendent of nursing.
She did much committee work for both the ANA and the ONA. As chair of the ONA Legislative Committee in the early '60s she helped legislation for collective bargaining for nurses get passed in 1961. She left UOMS in 1967 to take up a similar position at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in California.
