Harry Haviland Osgood (1875-1960) was an American artist. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Paris at the Academie Julian and Colaross. He was primarily an impressionist dune and landscape painter using oils and watercolors, but he also created etchings. Osgood was the director of the Atlanta Art School in 1900 and a member of the Chicago Society of Artists.
Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Bookplates are usually small decorative labels pasted into the front end page of a book to declare ownership. Common images or themes include the owner's name, a motto, coat-of-arms, crest, badge, or other related motifs. The phrase "Ex Libris" is Latin for "From the library of" and is often included in bookplate design. The oldest known bookplates are from 15th century Germany and were typically only used by the wealthy or for particularly important books. In the 20th century, bookplates began to be reproduced in a process that allowed elaborate and beautiful designs to be done cheaply, thus regaining their popularity.
