Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Gustav J. Lindstedt was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1897, and came to Portland, Oregon at a young age. In 1914, he began a job with the City of Portland, which he left in 1917 to serve in the 162nd Infantry Regiment (called the "Old Third Oregon") during World War I. After the war, he resumed working for the city in the Public Works Department. He retired in 1971; at one point his was the longest tenure in employment for the City of Portland. He was a member of the First Covenant Church of Portland, the City Club, the Urban League, the League of Oregon Cities, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Lindstedt died in Portland in March 1978.
Gustav J. Lindstedt's son, Warren R. Lindstedt, was born in Portland, Oregon in 1927. Warren Lindstedt was a medical claims adjuster for the Industrial Hospital Association and Nationwide Insurance. He married Doreen Donald in 1952, and they had three children: Steven, Susan, and Caroline. He died in 2005.

The collection consists of a biographical account of Gustav J. Lindstedt's service in the 162nd Infantry Regiment (known as the "Old Oregon Third") during World War I. The account was written by his son, Warren. The account's last pages give some details concerning Lindstedt's life after the war and his involvement with veterans' reunions. The account cites several history books, Lindstedt's letters, and Warren Lindstedt's personal recollections of conversations with Gustav J. Lindstedt, which are listed in a bibliography.
