Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Merle Clifford Miller (1918-1996) was born in Bernie, Missouri and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps on January 19, 1937 at age 19. He worked as a laborer, mechanic and truck driver during his service with the CCC and was stationed at departments in Shell Knob & Van Buren, MO., Leavenworth, KS., Gaquet, CA. and Thorp, WA. Miller sent most of his earnings home to support his mother and siblings during the Great Depression. According to his daughter, Mary Linda Miller, the period in which he worked for the CCC was among the happiest of his life.
