The collection (1852-1874) consists of correspondence regarding family, mining, and politics, and also contains articles of incorporation of Oregon businesses.
There are eighty-four letters related to family news, mining work in Oregon, and politics in Oregon and California, including:
eighteen from Josiah A. Burnett to his wife, Lucy, and others;
twenty-three from Andrew J. Burnett (brother) to J. A. and John S. Burnett;
fourteen from John S. Burnett (father) to J. A. and Andrew J. Burnett;
five from G. G. Foster to Lucy Burnett and Josiah Burnett;
two from William Thompson;
two from James K. Kelly;
and single letters from Joseph Lane and John H. Mitchell.
Letters describe survey work near The Dalles in 1860, and in the John Day country, 1873; mining and Democratic politics in California, 1860-1861; mining in the Salmon River country, 1861-1862; and politics in Jackson County, Oregon, 1860-1875.
The collection also contains articles of incorporation of the Eagle Creek Clay Wagon Road and Bridge Co. and the Salmon Creek Wagon Road Co., both 1862.
Four letters are originals, ten are photostat copies, and the remainder are typed copies. The documents are originals.
