Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Bernard Jaffe was born in Bellingham before moving to Seattle where he attended grade school, Garfield High School, and the University of Washington. He served in the Army Transportation Corps during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he married Audrey and they settled in Bellingham. They owned a number of war surplus businesses including the Northern Sales Company and Northwest Liquidators.

The Jaffes recount their personal histories but primarily discuss the history and future of the Jewish community in Bellingham, the founding of both Beth Israel and Eitz Chaim Synagogues, and the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Bellingham. 5773-002: Filmed interview with Bernard Jaffe about his experiences in WWII and afterwards with historical images as illustration. Jaffe was a captain in the Transportation Corps.

Scope and Content: Oral history interview conducted by Ernest and Doris Stiefel on May 1, 2006. The Jaffes recount their personal histories but primarily discuss the history and future of the Jewish community in Bellingham, the founding of both Beth Israel and Eitz Chaim Synagogues, and the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Bellingham.
