Biographical NoteReturn to Top

William Robert Eshelman was a pacifist, librarian, printer and editor who actively participated in preventing censorship, ending racial segregation and protesting the Vietnam War. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 23, 1921. His family moved to California in 1926. He graduated from Whittier Union High School in 1939. He enrolled in Pasadena Junior College intending to be a mechanical engineer. He transferred to Chapman College to major in Philosophy. He served as a conscientious objector in Civilian Public Service camp no. 56 at Waldport, Oregon. He joined the Fine Arts Group founded by poet William Everson. He co-founded the Untide Press in 1943 with William Everson, actor Kermit Sheets and artist Kemper Nomland. The name, Unite Press came from the journal "the Untide" the group published as a challenge to the official CPS camp journal "The Tide". He became the Assistant Camp Director in 1945. He was discharged from the CPS camp in 1946.

He worked with J. H. Batteigger Company in Los Angeles as a wholesale refrigeration equipment jobber. He was promoted as the Sales Promotion Manager at the company in 1947. Meanwhile, he joined the Rounce and Coffin Club. In 1948, he continued his education. He enrolled at the University of California to pursue M.A. in English Literature. He graduated from UCLA in 1950. In 1951, He received his Bachelor in Library Science form UCLA Berkeley. In the same year, he took job as Serials Librarian at Los Angeles State College. Between 1959 and 1965 he worked as a Librarian. The faculty of L.A. State College elected him to the Academic Senate, the first librarian to serve on that body. While he was editor of the California Librarian, the magazine earned the H. W. Wilson Library Periodical Award for the best state or regional journal. Eshelman was librarian and professor of bibliography at Bucknell University from 1965 to 1968. He joined other librarians in protest against Vietnam War. Eshelman was the editor of Wilson Library Bulletin from 1968 to 1978. In California, he chaired the Librarian Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee. The committee opposed censorship efforts of lawmakers, initiated the Fiske study of self-censorship in school libraries. He joined the national journals in their efforts to support the desegregation of public libraries in the South.

He was appointed president of Scarecrow Press from 1979. He retired in 1985. Eshelman edited and transcribed the correspondence between librarian and writer Lawrence Clark Powell and William Everson. The correspondence is titled ‘Take Hold Upon the Future’. Scarecrow Press published it in 1994. Scarecrow Press published his autobiography, ‘No Silence’ in 1997. Eshelman served on the editorial board of Choice Magazine, published by the American Library Association (ALA). He was also a member of the ALA Council and the ALA Committee on Accreditation. William Eshelman passed away on 9 August 2004 at his home in Portland, Oregon, aged 82.
