Historical NoteReturn to Top

Established in 1914 by Levantine Jews from western Turkey. The Congregation is proud to preserve the customs, language (Ladino) and foods of their heritage. Rabbi Shlomo Azose was the first Rabbi, followed on his death by his brother Isaac Azose. In 1924 the membership brought Rabbi Abraham Maimon from Turkey to serve as spiritual leader to the community. The Community was without an established Rabbi from the time of Rabbi A. Maimon’s death in 1931 until 1944, when his son, Rabbi Solomon Maimon returned from Yeshiva University in New York to fill his father’s role. Rabbi Maimon is believed to be the first Sephardic Rabbi ordained in America. He served the Congregation for 40 years, retiring in 1983. He was succeeded by Rabbi Simon Benzaquen of Venezuela.

The Congregation occupied synagogue buildings at 13th Avenue and Washington until 1929; at 20th Avenue and East Fir Street, until 1965 and in Seward Park (52nd Avenue South and Morgan Street) beginning in the fall of 1965.

In early 1970 a newsletter called LaBoz was first issued. Over the years, the look and content of LaBoz has evolved over the more than 33 years that it has been published. The size has increased from about 6-8 pages to 16 pages.

In February 2014, Rabbi Ben Hassan was welcomed to begin a new era in the Community.
