Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ray Holman (1944-) is a composer, teacher, and steel drum performer from Trinidad. At age 13, he began playing pan with the Invaders Steelband, which was then led by pan tuner Ellie Mannette. Seven years later, he became the youngest musician to win the solo Ping Pong competition at the Trinidad and Tobago Music Festival--a Ping Pong is a type of tenor pan. He is known for his innovative steelband arrangements and his beautiful calypsos. He has performed his music with artists from around the world and has earned international acclaim. Holman is also known for teaching workshops on the percussive arts at universities such as California State University, Humboldt State University, and the University of Washington.
