John William Fitzgerald was born on 30 July 1907 to William C. Fitzgerald and Ethel E. Enniss. He graduated from Brigham Young University with his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1929 and 1940. He received his doctorate from Stanford University. He served a mission for the LDS Church from 1934-1936 and married Mary Elsie Barr in 1937. Fitzgerald was a principal in the Granite School District and of Morningside Elementary School. He was disfellowshipped from the LDS Church after a dispute over African Americans and the priesthood.
