Historical NoteReturn to Top

The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was organized in 1810 and was the first missionarty society in the United States. Headquartered in Boston, it served as the missionary arm of several major church denominations, particularly the Congregational, Presbyterian, and Dutch Reformed Churches. The Board operated missions in the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii) and Oregon, among other locales.

The bulk of the collection consists of typescript copies of journal extracts, reports, correspondence, and financial documents of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions concerning its missionary operations in Oregon and the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii). Includes J. S. Green's report on exploration of the northwest coast of North America. Correspondents include J. S. Green, David Greene, William H. Gray, Henry H. Spalding, Cushing Eells, Alvan F. Waller, and Marcus Whitman. Also included are three original documents: a printed pamphlet titled "Extracts from the records of the Hawaiian Association from 1823 to 1836 (Honolulu, 1837); a manuscript titled "Instruction of the Prudential Committee of the A.B.C.F.M. to Rev. Mssrs. E. Walker, C. Eels, A. B. Smith, and Mr. W. H. Gray," 1838; and a broadside advertising a meeting on behalf of the board, New York City, 1847.
