Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Taped interview conducted by Meta Kaplan and Adina Russak on 12/16/75.
Friedlander describes his maternal grandparents' beginnings in San Francisco, their move to Seattle, and how they established Toklas and Singerman. (Alice B. Toklas was related to the family. She was a taboo subject.) He tells of paternal grandparents' beginnings in Rochester, N.Y. and in Columbus, Ohio, how they came to Seattle, and how they established Harrison and Friedlander, a pawn shop, and then Friedlander and Sons. He also describes the upward mobility of the family, Dr. Samual Koch's assiduous supervision of the Temple Sunday School, and the story of his daughter's "conversion" and marriage.
