Historical NoteReturn to Top
Umpqua Academy was a public school located in Wilbur, Oregon, organized under the auspices of the Methodist Church, in 1857. It's founder was James H. Wilbur and the town in which the school was located in was named after him (it was formerly known as Bunton's Gap.)
Wilbur built the first incarnation of the school in 1854 - a log building - on his own land claim in Bunton's Gap; he later deeded his land to the trustees of the Academy, and a new two-story school was built.
