Hilma Hanson Kimball was born on November 2, 1877 to Peter Hanson and Anna Gustafson of Butte, Montana. She grew up in Butte, graduated from Butte High School in 1896, and received her certificate for teaching the same year. From 1897 to 1898, she lived in Coloma, Montana, where she taught children in a small schoolhouse. By 1902 she was a teacher at the Butte Business College. Hilma married Albert Bates Kimball. They had three daughters. She died on December 1, 1942 in Missoula, Montana, at the age of sixty-five.

In this manuscript, dated November 4, 1933, Hilma Hanson Kimball explains the ancestry of her mother's and father's families, and describes growing up in Butte, Montana, including graduating from high school, getting her teaching certificate, living and teaching in Coloma, Montana, plays and actors she saw as a child, and how she and her husband, Albert, met at a party. She also writes about the town of Coloma, Mammoth Mine, and people who lived around it. She includes a trip thirty-five years after the mine had closed down.
